Marine Safety Captain Leslie Schwene is the 2025 Administrative Captain for the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. Schwene combines her passion for drowning prevention with her dedication to public education on beach and ocean safety. A strong advocate for women in lifesaving, Schwene aims to inspire and empower the next generation of women to take on critical roles in marine safety.


She earned a Master of Professional Studies in Emergency and Disaster Management from Georgetown University in May 2018. Her expertise in emergency planning and response has been instrumental in managing significant events for the City of Huntington Beach, including the COVID-19 pandemic, high-profile rallies and protests, large-scale city events such as the US Open of Surfing, the annual 4th of July celebrations, the Pacific Airshow, severe winter storms, and the 2021 Oil Spill.


Schwene graduated from the USC Marshall School of Business, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and a minor in Sports Media Studies through the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Her well-rounded education has equipped her with a unique skill set, blending strategic business acumen with expertise in communication and leadership.


Schwene plans to continue the strong tradition of beach and ocean safety to the community as well as continue to look for other outreach opportunities.

The Returning HBJGs Registration window opens on Monday, February 10, 2025. This is only for those 2024 returning HBJGs. The registration window closes on Sunday, February 23, 2025. Registering during this time guarantees your child’s program participation and session for the 2025 summer. Registration is online at www.HBSands.org. To avoid the transaction fee, go to your local HB Community Center to register.


For future HBJGs, the requirements are as follows: swim 100 yards at or under one minute and fifty seconds; tread water for five minutes; and swim under water for 10 yards at least three feet deep. Tryouts are open and available at www.HBSands.org
